Intense Winds Leave Tens of Thousands In the Dark in New Zealand

Storm damage in New Zealand
Citizens urged to remain inside as strong winds batter the country.

Intense gusts attaining speeds of approximately 155km/h (96mph) have caused approximately 90,000 homes without power and led agencies to cancel over 100 aircraft departures, based on local media.

The gales are influencing the whole southern region and southern sections of the North Island, according to the country's meteorological service.

The nation's agencies have announced rare severe gust advisories - the most severe warning - in key areas including Canterbury and Wellington.

Residents have been encouraged to stay indoors, refrain from journeys, and prepare for further power and communication outages.

Extensive Impact and Emergency Response

The power cut is primarily influencing homes predominantly in the South Island, although officials say that power was being slowly brought back.

Domestic outlets have reported that in some places homes have lost their roofs, whereas utility poles and vegetation have been toppled by the gales.

In Wellington, a person was fatally injured after being impacted by a falling limb at a well-known hiking path on Tuesday.

Meanwhile in Wellington, a female was pushed toward moving cars on a road by a powerful blast, in a event that was captured in a widely shared car camera footage.

Flights to and from the urban area have been suspended because of the gusts, while various routes and public facilities are also closed.

At the same time Canterbury officials have issued a emergency situation, to assist disaster response efforts.

But the severe conditions has compelled them to change various scheduled activities, with some outdoor rallies moved indoors or called off.
